Has It Been a While Since Your Last Dental Checkup? What to Expect

Ideally, we like to see patients every six months for dental checkups and cleanings, but we realize that life can often get in the way, so it is easy to fall behind with scheduling your regular dental appointments at Margolian Dentistry. Some people also find visiting the dentist intimidating, even though we are an extremely friendly and compassionate dental team. Others may have had a previous negative experience at another dental office. Seeing the dentist for the first time can make people feel a bit apprehensive, so here’s what to expect. Knowing what will happen can help prepare you for the appointment, helping to ease any anxieties. Also, please remember that if you feel anxious or nervous or have any concerns, we are here to help you, so please talk to us and let us know how you feel.

Receive a Warm Welcome

Whether it is your first visit or you have been coming to see us for years, you are assured of receiving a warm welcome. When seeing patients for the first time, we will need to review your medical and dental history to ensure any treatment we provide or recommend is safe and appropriate. We can also discuss your dental health concerns, such as any signs of tooth sensitivity in Ajax, dental pain, or difficulties with chewing or swallowing.

Professional Dental Cleaning

Most people benefit from a professional dental cleaning every six months to remove all plaque and tartar buildup. During this appointment, your teeth are cleaned thoroughly, scraping or scaling away all calculus or tartar that cannot be removed with an ordinary toothbrush. Your teeth are gently polished at the end of treatment, leaving you with that super fresh feeling and teeth that feel smooth and look a little brighter. Our hygiene team is also great at dental education in Whitby. If necessary, we can discuss how to improve your brushing and flossing routine, helping you maintain excellent dental health between appointments more easily.

Your Dental Exam

Our dentist will gently examine your mouth, carefully checking each tooth for any signs of sore spots or lesions that could indicate tooth decay in Oshawa. We also check any existing dental restorations. Although well-made and properly fitted dental restorations like crowns, fillings and bridges can last for years, they eventually need replacing. It’s important to replace these restorations in a timely manner so they can continue to protect your teeth, helping to prevent further infection and decay. Your gum health is extremely important as you need strong and healthy gums to support your teeth. The gum tissue surrounding each tooth is meticulously checked for any signs of infection or gum recession.

Dental X-Rays

Dental x-rays are useful for showing areas hidden from view by the contact areas between your teeth and the health of your jawbone and tooth roots. We use digital technology to take x-rays, so the images are viewable immediately. These x-rays are extremely safe; we only take them when necessary. Usually, when a patient visits us for the first time, it is preferable to take a complete set of x-rays, so we have a good overview of your dental health. We can then determine how often you will need to have x-rays in the future.

Once your dental exam is complete, our dentist will discuss their findings and your current dental health. If you need any treatment, we can provide a fully customized treatment plan, showing all possible options, the time needed to complete your treatment, and the costs. Sometimes more than one treatment may be available depending on the technique and materials chosen. We allow plenty of time to discuss your dental health and answer any questions.
