What Happens if You Need a Tooth Removed?

We only remove a tooth when there is no other option, and you can rest assured we will try extremely hard to save natural teeth. However, sometimes a tooth is so severely damaged or infected it is best to remove it. If you are in this situation, there is no need to worry as we can discuss how best to replace it before we take it out. Except for wisdom teeth, you always need to replace a tooth that is removed, as otherwise, it can negatively affect your dental health.

Options for tooth replacement in Oshawa include dentures, dental bridges, and dental implants.

Dentures

Tried and tested, dentures are a traditional, non-invasive and cost-effective way to restore missing teeth. Dentures can restore multiple missing teeth in the same arch, and we take tremendous care when designing and fabricating these appliances. Dentures consist of an acrylic gum-coloured base that rests directly on the gums, supporting the denture teeth. These days, denture teeth come in a huge range of different shapes, shades and sizes, so we can closely match these teeth to your existing teeth. However, dentures are removable and must be left out overnight to give the gums a chance to recover and biting strength with dentures is lower than natural teeth.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is non-removable and is supported by your natural teeth on either side of the gap. These teeth, called abutment teeth, are substantially reshaped so they can be covered with crowns. The crowns are then attached to the replacement tooth, called a pontic. If you have two or more teeth side by side that have failed, these can be replaced with a dental bridge, provided the abutment teeth are strong and healthy. A dental bridge is a great option that restores your biting strength and appearance. With the proper maintenance, a dental bridge in Whitby should last ten years or more before you need to replace it.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the most modern way to restore missing teeth, and treatment is very versatile. The implant is self-supporting, consisting of a small post or screw inserted into the jawbone during a short surgical procedure. The post soon ‘osseointegrates’ or bonds with the bone around it, creating a strong, stable anchorage point for a new tooth.

Our dentist in Ajax will not need to reshape the adjacent teeth, and an implant tooth has a similar biting strength to a real tooth. A dental implant is a great option if the teeth adjacent to the gap are not strong enough to support a dental bridge or are missing entirely. If you have several teeth missing that were originally side-by-side, dental implants can support a bridge, so you don’t need to replace every tooth with an implant.

While implant bridges and crowns are permanently fitted in place, we can also supply implant-supported dentures. Instead of resting on the gums, the denture clips onto the dental implants, but you can easily remove it whenever you need to clean the denture or clean around the implants.
