Do you delay seeing a dentist because of dental anxiety or fears in Oshawa? Learning more about sedation dentistry might help you.
At Margolian Dentistry, we can provide a range of sedation options tailored to meet your needs. Dental sedation can help you feel comfortable and relaxed, getting rid of fear and anxiety so you can receive the treatment you need or desire.
Everyone requiring dental treatment receives local anesthetic, so your treatment will be pain-free. Our dentists are very experienced in administering local anesthesia using techniques that feel more comfortable and can be used in conjunction with sedation dentistry.
Mild, Moderate or Deep Sedation
Different levels of sedation are available, and each can be adjusted to help you feel calmer.
Mild Sedation: Nitrous Oxide or Laughing Gas
Laughing gas is a form of mild dental sedation in Whitby. You breathe in the gas through a small mask that fits comfortably over your nose. Before long, you will feel relaxed and calmer and be able to cope with the treatment.
When your treatment is complete, we remove the mask, and it doesn’t take long for your body to eliminate the gas. In a short while, you will feel back to normal. If you wish, you can even drive yourself home.
Moderate Sedation: Oral Conscious Sedation
Moderate sedation could be the answer if you need something a bit more. You will be prescribed an oral sedative to take approximately an hour before your appointment. When you sit in the dental chair, you will already feel calmer. We can use oral sedation with laughing gas to help provide greater relaxation.
Deep Sedation: Intravenous Conscious Sedation
Deep sedation can be nice if you require a longer procedure, for example, if you need complex dental implant treatment in Ajax and want to feel deeply relaxed. Intravenous conscious sedation is sometimes called twilight sedation because you will feel so calm that you could even fall asleep.
However, you will still be able to respond to any questions we ask and let us know if you feel any discomfort and need to take a break. One great thing about intravenous sedation is that it contains an amnesiac. After your treatment, you will likely remember little or nothing about the procedure, and it may seem like mere minutes have passed.
You will need someone to take you home after intravenous sedation and must take it easy for the rest of the day until the sedative is eliminated from your body.
Ensuring You Are Safe During Your Treatment
Your health and well-being are always our main priority. Before recommending any sedation, we will carefully review your medical health. We must ensure you don’t have any pre-existing conditions or are taking any medications that could affect sedation dentistry.
During your appointment, we monitor you closely and adjust your treatment accordingly to help keep you safe and comfortable.
What about General Anesthesia?
With a general anesthetic, you would be unconscious for the entire treatment, and this would be carried out in a hospital setting. We would only recommend a general anesthetic for someone who requires extensive dental treatment that is complex or who has other health issues requiring consideration.
Taking Care of Nervous Patients
Everyone in our practice is extremely gentle, and we treat nervous or anxious patients with compassion and respect. If you do have dental anxieties, please let us know before your treatment so we can take the time to ensure you feel more relaxed and comfortable.
