Perfecting Your Smile with Porcelain Veneers

If you have always desired a more beautiful smile, you’re probably in the habit of noticing the teeth of celebrities, film stars and others in the public eye. Often their teeth can seem to be impossibly perfect, but the chances are they’ve improved their smile with porcelain veneers. A chip or crack in a tooth or an unsightly gap in between teeth can frequently be covered up. Broken or discoloured and stained teeth can be made to look attractive once more. Porcelain veneers can also hide misshapen teeth or will correct the alignment of teeth that are just slightly crooked.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are very thin shells of porcelain that custom-made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, creating a more perfect appearance. They are fabricated in a dental lab to our specific design and prescription and are firmly bonded onto the tooth surface. Alternatively, we may be able to make your veneers while you wait, using our on-site milling machine and which produces extremely high-quality restorations.

It is a very popular treatment, and porcelain veneers in Whitby are frequently used as part of smile makeovers or are combined with other cosmetic dentistry procedures like teeth whitening. Some people will only need one or two veneers, while others choose to have all their front teeth veneered. It depends on your aims and desires for treatment!

Who Can Have Porcelain Veneers?
Treatment is ideal if you have minor imperfections that you want to hide, and if your teeth are generally strong and healthy. We may not suggest this treatment if your teeth are substantially decayed or have large fillings as instead, they may benefit from being covered entirely with a protective porcelain crown in Ajax. The best way to find out for sure is to come and see us here at Margolian Dentistry.

What Is the Procedure for Having Porcelain Veneers?
Once we have assessed your suitability for veneers, we can plan your treatment. Usually, it’s necessary to prepare your teeth, removing a small amount of enamel that is typically the same thickness as the veneer, so about 0.5 mm. This ensures that your veneers look and feel natural and won’t feel too large and bulky in the mouth. Don’t worry, as we use local anesthetic to ensure you cannot feel a thing during tooth preparation.

When your teeth are ready, we take a digital dental impression which is far more sophisticated and much more accurate than traditional tray impressions. Instead of wearing an uncomfortable mouth tray and having to remain perfectly still for several minutes, your mouth is scanned using a tiny digital camera. All the images taken by the digital camera are used to create a virtual 3-D impression of your mouth. The impression file is either sent securely to our dental lab or is used to fabricate your veneers in our office. When your veneers are ready, they are tried in the mouth as we need to check they fit perfectly and look great and, of course, you get the chance to look too. Once everybody is happy with the veneers, they are bonded onto your teeth.

Caring for Your Porcelain Veneers
All types of restorations will need renewing eventually, but if you care for your veneers properly, they will last longer. Make sure you brush and floss them thoroughly, just like you would your natural teeth. It is crucial to avoid opening packets or using your teeth as tools because this may well break your veneers and your own teeth. It’s far cheaper to use the proper tools!
