Advantages of Choosing Laser Dentistry

Our regular patients will already know that here at Margolian Dentistry, we use the latest technologies and the very best techniques to provide an optimal treatment outcome. One technology we often use is laser dentistry in Oshawa.

What Is Laser Dentistry?

Laser dentistry is where a laser is used to treat dental issues. The dental laser creates light energy concentrated into a very focused, narrow beam. As the laser hits tissue, it produces a reaction that allows a dentist to remove the tissue or to reshape it.

We can use laser dentistry in various applications, where it can replace a traditional dental drill. Our dental laser is particularly gentle, combining a fine spray of water with the laser energy for a more comfortable patient experience.

A Gentler Treatment for Anxious Patients

Often, when using a dental laser, it’s unnecessary to use a local anesthetic, which is a huge bonus for people who feel anxious about seeing the dentist and particularly about receiving a numbing injection. Also, laser dentistry is quieter, eliminating the sound of the traditional dental drill.

Dental Fillings and Root Canal Therapy

Treatment is very versatile, and we can use a laser when preparing a new cavity in a tooth to receive the filling while preserving more of the healthy tooth structure. Lasers are also used during root canal therapy. The laser energy is particularly effective at disinfecting the tooth after treating a tooth with root canal therapy. The better we can disinfect the tooth, the greater the likelihood of long-term success.

Treating Gum Problems

It can be enormously helpful to use a dental laser when treating gum issues. The laser removes tissue extremely precisely, especially when reshaping gums, to correct a gummy smile in Ajax. People with gum infections can also benefit from this treatment. The dental laser can remove gum tissue that is too severely damaged to heal, leaving healthy tissue intact. It can disinfect the gums after treatment for periodontal (gum) disease.

For example, with advanced gum disease, the gums will pull away from the teeth, exposing the tooth roots and creating deep pockets called periodontal pockets and which harbour harmful bacteria. These pockets can be deep cleaned to help remove plaque and tartar from teeth and exposed tooth roots but using laser dentistry helps to clean the pockets more thoroughly.

Tooth Extractions and Dental Implants and More

Our dental laser can treat both soft and hard tissues, which is useful during oral surgery and whenever we need to cut teeth and bone and gums. We can use a dental laser during tooth extractions, during implant treatments in Whitby, and in many other ways. For example, if we need to remove a small piece of tissue for a biopsy, a dental laser lets us remove the tissue more precisely. Lasers are also very useful in removing mouth lesions and can sometimes be used to relieve the pain of canker sores by cauterizing the sore.

Fewer Side-Effects and Faster Healing

Unlike more traditional procedures where a scalpel is used, the energy produced by a dental laser automatically seals any small blood vessels that may be cut during treatment. Consequently, it’s often unnecessary to place any stitches. Also, healing is faster afterwards with fewer side-effects such as swelling and bleeding, so it’s a much more comfortable experience for our patients.

Is Laser Dentistry Safe?

Dental lasers have been around for a while now, and our dental laser is extremely modern and very well maintained, so treatment is safe. Our dentists are trained in using the dental laser correctly, selecting exactly the right wavelength for your treatment.
