Invisalign vs. Porcelain Veneers: Which is Best?

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your teeth, you might have wondered about cosmetic dentistry to transform the way they look. Numerous dental procedures can help to improve appearance, and two popular and highly effective treatments are Invisalign and porcelain veneers in Oshawa. Each will achieve slightly different effects, and it might be that you only need one or the other, but there are occasions when combining the two can provide the most conservative solution.

Invisalign and Its Benefits
Invisalign is a well-known and popular adult orthodontic system. Unlike traditional fixed braces where the brackets and wires are easily visible, Invisalign uses removable, clear plastic aligners that fit tightly over the teeth, moving them into new positions which are precisely pre-planned. Once the aligners are in the mouth, they are virtually invisible and are easily removed for regular brushing and flossing and for mealtimes. Usually, treatment will take a year to complete. However, when tooth realignment is merely cosmetic and only affects the front teeth, Invisalign may be a lot quicker and could be completed in a matter of months. Your teeth need to be reasonably strong and healthy for Invisalign.

Adult orthodontics can be a wonderful solution when teeth need realigning or if you have problems with your bite. As teeth are only repositioned their appearance remains the same. Invisalign will not affect any issues with discolouration or other issues such as chips or cracks in teeth. This is where veneers can be helpful!

Porcelain Veneers and Their Benefits
Porcelain veneers consist of very thin shells of porcelain made to fit precisely over the front surfaces of teeth. They are useful if you have teeth that are internally stained, chipped or worn down, or which are only very slightly out of alignment. Veneers are also useful if you have teeth that aren’t as nicely shaped as you’d like, or which are too small. Using porcelain veneers in Whitby can provide you with a more cosmetically perfect smile and treatment is relatively quick. However, most often your tooth structure must be permanently altered.

Before your veneers are fitted, our dentist will need to carefully reshape the surfaces, removing a tiny amount of tooth enamel to ensure there is adequate room for the veneers. Otherwise, your new veneers could feel very bulky and will look unnatural. Although the amount of tooth structure removed is minimal, it does mean treatment is irreversible. Your teeth need to be reasonably strong and healthy for porcelain veneers, and they shouldn’t have any large fillings or areas of decay.

Deciding Which Is the Best Option
Both treatments can provide excellent results, but it’s important to be aware of how they will affect your dental health and your smile. Our dentist will examine your teeth to make sure these treatments are suitable and can discuss which solution might be best. As with any treatment recommended by us here at Margolian Dentistry, we aim to preserve and protect your natural teeth whenever possible.

Although porcelain veneers provide a more immediate effect, Invisalign in Ajax can be a more conservative treatment, and it combines well with porcelain veneers. For example, if your teeth are out of alignment and just one or two are perhaps stained or chipped, it could be worth having Invisalign treatment to straighten them before selectively covering teeth that need veneers. However, if your teeth are only slightly out of alignment and are discoloured or chipped and have other problems that can’t be easily corrected with Invisalign, porcelain veneers could be the best choice for you.
